Driver jailed after passenger thrown from car and killed following police chase
A driver who killed a passenger after jumping a red light in Birmingham has been jailed.
Florin Marin fled the scene of the fatal crash in Lichfield Road, Aston, on January 21 this year, but was found by officers minutes later hiding in a nearby garden.
Marin, aged 32, was driving a black BMW which had earlier failed to stop for police in Aston after officers spotted it was being driven without insurance.
Officers abandoned a pursuit after a few minutes but Marin continued to drive dangerously, travelling at up to 90mph in 30mph zones and as he travelled along Lichfield Road, he undertook other vehicles by using the bus lane.
At the junction with Church Road Marin went through a red light and hit a red Toyota Aygo which was turning right onto Lichfield Road.
The Aygo was flipped onto its roof by the impact and 20-year-old passenger Omar Harun was thrown from the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Aygo, Fawaz Hassan, and a passenger in the BMW, Mohammed Said, both aged 26, suffered serious injuries.
Following hospital treatment both men are now continuing their recoveries at home.
Marin, from Birchfield Road, Aston, was today jailed for seven years and four months and banned from driving for eight years and eight months.
He had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and a further count of failing to stop after a road accident.
Sergeant Alan Hands from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Marin’s actions showed a complete disregard for the rules of the road and the safety of other road users.
"His decisions and manner of his driving have tragically robbed a 20-year-old man of his life and left two other men seriously injured.
“Our thoughts remain with Omar’s family at this extremely difficult time, whilst also wishing the two other men a full recovery."
