WATCH: Dangerous driver tried to leg it after 100 mph police chase through city streets
A dangerous driver has been jailed after speeding at up to 100 mph to evade police.
Officers on motorbike patrol in Aston, Birmingham, spotted the white VW Golf R being driven by Nicholas Caddy when they saw a passenger get out and hurry away.
Police followed the car and tried to get it to pull over, but it sped away.
Caddy, aged 25, reached 100mph, overtaking a van on a bend and swerving to avoid stationary traffic in the Birchfield Road area.
He sped through a red light on Lozells Road, hitting 90mph before turning on to the Soho Road.
There, he lost control and crashed outside a nursery before trying to flee on foot but was quickly arrested.
In interview, Caddy said he had spotted police when he dropped his friend off at the shop, and that he had panicked because the friend had left a bag of cannabis in the car.
At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, Caddy, of Marfield Close, Minworth, admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for one year and banned from driving for 42 months following the pursuit, which happened on April 13.
Pc Steve Lovering, who was one of the two police motorcyclists who pursued Caddy, said: “This was appalling driving at really high speeds through the streets of Birmingham.
“We worked out that the pursuit covered a distance of 1.6 miles and took 90 seconds, meaning an average speed of 64mph.”
