PC Christopher Burnham was struck by a Mini in the Holbrooks area of Coventry on Wednesday at around 2.45pm.

PC Burnham, aged 48, who has been with the West Midlands Police force for 25 years, remains critically ill in hospital. He was left with a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain and a shattered knee.

He is expected to remain in hospital for some time and is being supported by his family.

Tekle Lennox, of no fixed address, has been charged with attempted murder, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

The 37-year-old is due to appear before Coventry Magistrates Court on Monday.

Previously, Chief Superintendent Mike O’Hara, in charge of policing in Coventry, said: “Chris is a very well-regarded and proactive Foleshill neighbourhood officer, who has a number of commendations.

“He was doing his job in keeping Coventry safe when he has been deliberately driven at by someone who then made off from the scene."

Police enquiries continue and anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101.
