Matthew Page was accused of murder after Mary Page was found dead in a bedroom at her home in James Street, Bilston, on February 1.

Mr Peter Grieves-Smith, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court: “Following reports from two eminent psychologists we are now content with the plea but there are still a few issues to resolve before sentencing can take place.”

Senior coroner Zafar Siddique said when the inquest into her death opened later in February: “Her son Matthew Page attended the police station, accompanied by her other son, where an allegation was made he had killed his mother the previous night.

“She was located in the bedroom at the address and despite resuscitation attempts she was pronounced dead shortly after 6pm that day."

Police had said Mrs Page suffered a head injury but a post mortem failed to ascertain the cause of death.

The 40-year-old defendant, who also lived in James Street, was remanded in custody until a later date when he will be sentenced.
