A special constable struggling to arrest a violent woman called for back-up from his colleagues – only for his mum, also a PCSO, to turn up and lend a helping hand.

Jack Langford was called to a domestic incident in Walsall during a late shift where a woman had smashed a glass ashtray into her partner’s face causing a serious injury.

He managed to restrain and handcuff the woman, who was very drunk and spat at him, before radioing for assistance.

As he brought her downstairs, his mother PCSO Cheryl Langford, who worked with another unit, walked through the door to assist him.

He said: "As I brought her downstairs, the woman shouted: 'I hope your mother is proud of you'. You couldn’t make it up. Once she was taken away, I had to ask 'Well, are you proud?' Mom said words to the effect of 'Not when you can’t handle your prisoner'. The absolute cheek."

Pc Langford recalled the incident in tribute to his mother as West Midlands Police marked Mothers' Day by highlighting the number of officers who have followed their mothers into the force.

Cheryl Langford joined the force before he was born, starting out as a traffic warden in Dudley town centre before becoming a PCSO in Coseley and Dudley and finally a fully qualified police constable in 2017.

Son Jack became a constable first however, qualifying in 2015.

He said: "She was always my inspiration growing up as she was a PCSO in the area where I went to school. Seeing her on the beat and getting to hear about all the interesting stories that happened in the area had a real impact on me.

"It’s funny because everyone knew who my mother was and none of them had a bad word to say. I’m sure some people used to know her as the smiling Cheryl because, no matter what, she always has a smile to make others feel better."

Jack initially joined the force as a special constable, working in Dudley where his mother's neighbourhood team coached and mentored him.

He said: "My mom truly is inspirational and continues each and every day to make me feel proud."
