Violence flared after Wade Overton and his brother Liam searched his girlfriend's car for a missing handbag which was found in the boot, a judge heard.

She had returned to the Meadow Lark in Dibdale Road, Dudley, where there was a family celebration, thinking the bag had been left on the premises and stopped in a place which blocked the way out, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

This meant Ashley Saa, who had just driven onto the car park to collect friends, could not leave for some time.

He revved his engine and moved closer to the other vehicle, prompting the Overton brothers to approach him aggressively, it was said.

From pushing to bottle attack

Several of the passengers got out while Saa stayed in the driver's seat as pushing and shoving led to Wade being punched and his brother going to help him, explained Mr Richard McConaghy, prosecuting.

The defendant got out of his car and became involved in a struggle with Liam who punched him at least twice, the court heard.

Then Saa was either handed or picked up a bottle with which he struck both brothers over the head several times and chased one of them out of the car park.

The defendant then drove away through the car park entrance but was later traced by police because he was known to one of the brothers, both of whom needed hospital treatment for head and face wounds.

Mr Michael Anning, defending, argued: "The Overtons were the first to act aggressively and Liam punched the defendant at least twice.

"The defendant was entitled to act in self defence but use of the bottle was excessive. This would not have happened had the Overtons not started it."

Saa, from The Broadway, Dudley and of previous good character, admitted possession of an offensive weapon and two offences of wounding during the incident on February 25 2017.

He was jailed for 45 weeks by Recorder Alistair Smith who told him: "You were inconvenienced, but not to a great extent and an element of impatience provoked the Overtons into a certain amount of aggression. You suffered some provocation but completely over reacted."
