Two men suffer 'life-changing' injuries in Birmingham shootings

Two men have suffered life-changing injuries after separate shootings within hours in Birmingham.

The first incident was in Soho Road, Handsworth, at around 2.30pm on Friday.

A 21-year-old who was struck in the hip survived but was seriously injured. He was rushed to hospital after the attack, not far from West Bromwich Albion's Hawthrorns ground.

The victim remains in hospital and police said he is believed to have suffered life-changing injuries as a result of the shooting. Detectives are scouring CCTV.

Detective Inspector Vanessa Eyles from Force CID, said: "Investigations remain underway . . . to establish the circumstances around what happened and how this man came to receive this nasty injury.

"We will not tolerate anyone being shot and we are determined to catch whoever was responsible. I would urge anyone with information which can assist us to get in contact as soon as possible."

West Midlands Police has launched an appeal for anyone with information to call 101 quoting crime reference number 20BW/267055H/18 or Crimestoppers anonymously.

It came just hours before a man was shot near a McDonald's in Bordesley Green in another day of violence in the second city.

In that incident a 22-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh in an alleyway between Alum Drive and Belchers Lane, at around 8.30pm. He also is in hospital being treated for injuries that are believed to be life-changing but not life-threatening.

CCTV in the area is being examined.

Chief Inspector Helen Bailey from Birmingham East Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: “We are investigating to find out exactly what happened and are appealing for anyone with information which might assist us to get in touch as soon as possible.”
