Police have been given extra time to question a man suspected of killing a woman at her West Bromwich home.

The woman, aged 60, died after being found 'with injuries' by ambulance service staff at a bungalow in the Hateley Heath area at 3.50am on Saturday.

Paramedics immediately alerted police and a 64-year-old man, who is believed to be known to the woman, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

She was taken to hospital but died soon after arriving.

The suspect remained in custody on Sunday afternoon after detectives were granted extra time to question him.

Cordon

The property in Sussex Avenue was cordoned off on Saturday as officers started house-to-house inquiries.

Neighbours said the couple had only moved into the property a few weeks ago and had not appeared in the best of health.

Stuart Duncan, 70, said his partner had been woken by the flashing blue lights of the emergency service vehicles in the early hours.

"It's hard to believe what's happened. I'd seen them out and about but we'd not spoken to them yet," said Mr Duncan.

Another resident, who did not want to be named said: "This is so scary. They moved in about six or seven weeks ago. I'd talked to him, just to say hello but that was it."

The suspect's royal blue Nissan Juke remained parked in the driveway inside the police cordon over the weekend.

A driver who was passing the scene at around 8.30am said he was shocked by the news.

The man, who does not want to be identified, said: "I could tell it was something serious by the way the place was cordoned off and a police car was blocking the driveway, but it is shocking to find out what happened.

"I used to live a couple of doors away and was glad to move away from the area."

A post mortem was due to take place over the weekend.
