Akeem Pickett was ‘play fighting’ in the street with a friend on a night out when a car stopped on the opposite side of the street in Stourbridge town centre, a judge heard.

Jugjeet Singh got out and went in one direction to relieve himself while another passenger headed towards the two men who were pushing and pulling each other, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

When the defendant returned he feared his friend was surrounded by the pair and grabbed a hammer from the car before attacking Mr Pickett from behind, said Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting.

The attacker landed up to eight blows, striking the skull, shoulder and arm until the victim collapsed onto the pavement in Market Street on December 17 last year.

Mr Pickett, who accepted he had drunk ‘quite a bit,’ told police he felt faint with blood pouring from his head and feared he might be killed.

His injuries were found to be less serious than might have been imagined and the wounds were glued, the court heard.

Singh was arrested within three hours.

Mr Lee Marklew, defending, said: “He admits taking drugs during the evening and lost his head when heavily intoxicated.

“He returned to the car after relieving himself to see his friend being threatened by two large men. He reacted badly while in temper and drink and knows he could have killed the injured party.”

Singh from Oval Road, Tipton, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was sent to prison for three years eight months.
