Man shot by police in dawn Birmingham raid
A man was shot by police during a dawn raid on a house that led to six people being arrested.
Officers stormed an address in Shepherds Gardens, Edgbaston, hunting an individual wanted in connection with a firearms offence.
A 30-year-old man was shot and taken to hospital after sustaining an arm injury, which West Midlands Police said was not thought to be life-threatening.
Armed officers smashed their way into the house at 5am this morning and arrested four men and two women from Birmingham on suspicion of firearms offences.
The men aged 21, 35, 45 and 52 and women, aged 59 and 64, remained in custody on Tuesday afternoon.
The force said a gun was found at the property and was seized to be forensically examined.
The incident has been referred to the police watchdog, which will now launch an investigation.
The force has not confirmed what prompted the officer to fire at the man during yesterday’s action.
The road, which is not far from the busy Five Ways roundabout, was cordoned off following the shooting, which left neighbours stunned.
A police incident support van also joined officers at the scene.
One resident said: “I heard gunshots and looked out the window, then me and my wife looked out and saw the man lying down on the patio.
“We thought he was dead, but he had hurt his arm and was trying to jump back up. Then the ambulance took him away.”
Police said the arrests were not connected to the Conservative Party Conference, which is taking place in the city, and has resulted in increased security.
A force spokesman said: “Another man at the address was shot by police during the warrant and has been taken to hospital with an arm injury.
“It is not believed to be life threatening. Inquiries are at an early stage and investigations are ongoing.
“The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).”
