Teenager charged over West Park murder

A teenage boy has been charged with murder after a girl’s body was found in West Park.

Detectives were granted extra time to quiz two suspects following the discovery of 14-year-old Viktorija Sokolova in West Park, Wolverhampton on Thursday.

Last night police charged a 16-year-old boy with her murder. He is due to appear at Dudley Magistrates Court today. A second boy, aged 17, has been bailed pending further investigation.

West Park remains closed while a comprehensive forensic examination is continued.

The victim's family have today paid tribute to her. In a statement they said: "Viktorija was like a little angel, she made our lives so colourful and full of meaning.

"We can’t believe she has left us at such a young age. We will never forget you our sweetheart.

"You will be living in our hearts, soul and mind forever. Goodbye our little angel."

The suspects were taken into custody after being arrested at their home addresses in Wolverhampton on Friday less than 24 hours after the murder investigation had launched.

Viktorija, known as Tori, had been reported missing by her family only the day before. Her body was discovered by a member of the public near the lake in West Park at about 7am on Thursday.

An online fund to help her parents pay for her funeral has attracted donations from more than 350 people and has already topped £4,500.

A post mortem revealed she had died from ‘blunt force trauma’ to the head. Police said her family were being supported by specialist officers. The 43-acre park was sealed off after the horrific discovery.

Several people contacted detectives after an appeal for information, while extra patrols of the area were taking place over the weekend. Tributes have also been paid online to the victim have been paid online. Rachel Bradbury posted: “Tori was a lovely young lady and would be very honoured by everyone that has donated. I hope she knew how many people cared about her. Sleep tight little angel x.”

Julie Therockchick Shaooni said: “This unexpected tragedy could have happened to any of our families. If we can help to avoid any financial worry for Tori’s Mum and Dad then this is what we have to do as a community. “

Lisa Bradley wrote: “My heart breaks for this innocent child and her family my prays and thoughts are with u all.”

Mark Crisp posted: “We will be praying for Viktorija at Mass this Sunday at Ss Peter and Paul where she was confirmed only a few years ago. God bless you Viktorija, may you rest in peace. Amen.”

Bethany Zielinskj, who set up the crowdfunding appeal thanked those who had contributed. She wrote: “Thank you so much everyone that has donated. We will make sure she has the best send off ever and help her family out as much as we can. We all need to stay strong.”
