Rapist who invited victim back to watch Netflix locked up for 10 years
Yates glass collector Lee Shaw has been jailed after attacking his victim while she slept.
A rapist who attacked his sleeping victim after inviting her to watch Netflix and eat ice cream has been locked up for 10 years.
Father-to-be Lee Shaw left the woman in ‘mental turmoil’ and contemplating suicide after assaulting her at his home.
Sentencing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Judge Simon Ward said of Shaw’s invitation to go back and watch Netflix: “You and she, plainly and very sadly, had completely different attitudes about what that meant.
“You failed to understand that if a woman goes to a man’s house to watch movies and eat ice cream, that doesn’t mean she wants to have sex with the man.
“She has found it impossible to put out of her mind what happened.
"She has begun to see herself not in terms of being a fully-functioning human being but in terms of being a rape victim.
“This has badly affected almost every aspect of her life and relationship.”
Jurors convicted glass collector Shaw, who worked at Walsall’s Yates bar, of rape and sexual assault following a trial in March.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, realised she could not leave Shaw’s home as she only had money for the bus and there were no running services.
She went to sleep but woke up shortly after to find the 35-year-old assaulting her, the court heard on Wednesday.
Judge Ward added: “She [then] pretended to be asleep because she wanted to make it clear to you that she did not want any of that but she was terrified of putting up a struggle because she did not know what you would do.”
The court was told Shaw, of no fixed abode, ‘accepted’ the jury’s verdict despite claiming the victim was the ‘instigator’ during his trial.
"Shaw, who had not committed any offences for 10 years, was also handed a restraining order and must sign the sex offenders register for life.
