The homemade pistol was found, with a live 410 cartridge in it, hidden in a black bag behind pipes at the back of a sink in Mark Bannister's home in September last year.

Police were acting on a tip off when armed officers seized the gun and ammunition and arrested Bannister at the Ebenezer Street flat.

Bannister, aged 42, pleaded guilty to possession of a homemade handgun when prohibited for life and on Friday was sentenced to seven years behind bars at Stafford Crown Court.

Chief Inspector Sarah Wainwright, of Cannock Chase Local Policing Team, said: “This was potentially a very dangerous weapon.

"We’re glad that Bannister is now behind bars and this weapon will now be destroyed.

"We take the safety of our communities very seriously and will not tolerate this behaviour.”
