The team had spent four hours in water on a separate job in Rowley Regis last Tuesday and were returning to get changed when they were flagged down by a 13-year-old boy.

He told the officers that three youths, who were older than him, had robbed his mobile and threatened to stab him on High Street, Blackheath, although the knife had not been shown to him.

The search team proceeded to chase down the suspects and caught up with three youths all aged 16 to 17 who had been slowed down by a brave member of the public who intervened.

One of them was found to have a large kitchen knife, with a seven to eight inch blade, in his waistband. The victim's mobile phone was also recovered.

All three were taken in for questioning and released under investigation while enquiries continue.

West Midlands Police later released an image of the black handled knife.
