Stabbed police constable 'making good progress' after attack on duty
A police officer who was stabbed in the neck and back on duty is making 'good progress' in hospital.
The 36-year-old was stabbed during an attempted arrest at a property on Wood End Road, Erdington, Birmingham, just after 5pm on Tuesday.
The officers attended the address as part of a pre-planned arrest but events turned violent.
A number of specialist police units were deployed to the scene while the incident was ongoing to try to bring the incident "to a safe conclusion", West Midlands Police said.
The police constable underwent surgery for the wound to his neck overnight.
West Midlands Police said say the surgery was successful and the chest wound is superficial.
He remains sedated in hospital today.
A 48-year-old man was arrested initially on suspicion of two counts of GBH.
He remains in police custody and will be questioned in due course.
Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell said: “I am so pleased to report that our officer is recovering well in hospital following surgery. It is still early days, but the messages of support to him and his family have made a huge difference.
“Our officers’ welfare is an absolute priority and I am proud of the colleagues who rushed to his aid and the support teams who brought this incident to a safe conclusion.”
Chief constable Dave Thompson joined those well-wishers offering their support.
Chief Superintendent Bell tweeted: "We are with him and his family in hospital, and looking after colleagues who witnessed this. An officer just doing his best to protect you."
