Machete attacker who tried to kill woman and boy aged two is jailed for 28 years
A machete attacker who tried to kill a mother and her two-year-old son along with another man has been jailed for 28 years.
Mohammed Tabriz launched attacks on his victims in Smethwick and Birmingham.
The violence began when he attacked a man aged 19 at an address in Hales Lane, Smethwick, on the evening of December 6 last year.
He left his victim with serious head injuries, before moving on to Penley Grove, Washwood Heath, six miles away, where he turned on his female victim, aged 28.
She was left with serious head injuries, while her son was also injured.
Tabriz was arrested, but denied involvement and tried to get others to corroborate alibis that he had invented.
Det Sgt Jamie Mason revealed: "He said he was at home asleep at the time of the attacks, but we found compelling evidence which placed him at the scenes of the crimes.
"Tabriz had hired a car the day before and bought an orange fluorescent jacket, which he wore for one of the attacks. A label from the jacket was found in the hire car, but the jacket was missing.
"Analysis of Tabriz’s mobile phone also placed him in the vicinity of one of the attacks.
"Tabriz had suspected his estranged wife was having an affair and this is thought to have been what had motivated him to commit such acts of violence.
"His first victim has significant and long lasting injuries, both physical and psychological and both he and the woman have permanent scarring which is a daily reminder of their ordeal."
Tabriz, aged 36 from Fentham Road, Aston, was found guilty of three charges of attempted murder after a trial lasting nine days at Birmingham Crown Court.
He was given 28 years for attempting to murder the man, 18 years for the woman and 12 years for her son.
All the sentences will run concurrently.
