Driver caught using STRING attached to a gearstick to 'power' windscreen wipers

Police were stunned to find this van with its windscreen wipers being 'powered' by a piece of STRING attached to the gearstick today.

The vehicle has been taken off the road after it was caught in a blitz by West Midlands Police.

Sandwell's Police Partnership Team tweeted this image of the van, which also appeared to have a wing mirror being kept together with parcel tape.

The official West Midlands Police Twitter account joked that the unusual set up was 'knot acceptable'.

While another Twitter user said: "Wasn't raining. He should have removed the string. How daft can you be?"

While colleagues at the Central Motorway Police group added: "Of all the defects found on numerous dangerous vehicles in Sandwell today, this was the most amusing."

The vehicles were caught in a day of action with police and other agencies targeting everything from speeding motorists to alcohol licensing issues.
