The victim, who lives in West Bromwich, was found lying unconscious in Bridge Street near the Religion nightclub at 3.30am on Saturday.

Initially, it was thought he might have been drunk but it quickly became apparent that he had been assaulted. It is possible the injured man may have hit his head on the ground after being punched.

He was taken to hospital where it was discovered he had a serious head injury. His condition was described at critical over the weekend, but this afternoon police said he was 'stable'.

A 20-year-old man, believed to come from the Blakenall area, was detained by door staff not far from where the victim was attacked.

He was handed over to police and was initially detained on suspicion of assault but was later released ‘under investigation’ while police continue inquiries into the incident. He will ordered to return to a police station at a later date when the inquiry has been completed.
