Gareth Cable is on trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court

Gareth Cable told jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court he repeatedly stabbed James Cable in front of two police officers after fearing his brother would hurt him.

Taking the stand on Tuesday, the 41-year-old claimed a pink handled knife he used to deliver the blows at his sister's Walsall home was carried to the property by his brother.

The defendant recalled being at the Yew Tree Estate home when James Cable started banging on the front door and threatening he would shoot their sister Lorraine on February 23.

Gareth Cable said he then panicked and picked up a black handled knife from the kitchen but claimed he had no intention to assault his brother with it.

He told the jury of five men and seven women he grabbed it for protection, adding: "He gets to me in certain ways. I was angry, I was not thinking straight."

Wearing jeans and a grey jumper in the stand, the defendant said he later spotted the pink handled blade in the waistband of his brother's Adidas tracksuit bottoms when he went outside as police arrived.

He grabbed the knife from the 26-year-old before the pair wrestled at the Birchfield Way property, the court heard.

But the defendant claimed he was not trying to kill his brother when he slashed his face and body, revealing he only wanted to 'hurt him'.

He added: "I accept he had the blade but then when I took the blade off him, I lost all senses."

Gareth Cable, who was a self-employed graphic designer at the time, said he forgot a Stanley knife he used at his West Bromwich workplace was still in his pocket when he arrived at his sister's home.

He went on to say he found the police interview stressful and was upset when officers quizzed him, adding: "He's my brother, I love him. It shouldn't have got to that."

Mr Dean Kershaw, prosecuting, put it to the defendant: "You were thinking 'I'm going to [stab the knife] so many times into his head, it will end his life'. That's what you were thinking wasn't it?"

The defendant, of Norton Crescent, Bordesley Green, Birmingham, replied: "No."

During the trial, bodycam footage was played, capturing the moment defendant Gareth Cable appeared to pounce on his brother during what the prosecution allege was a frenzied attack.

The jury of five men and seven women watched the recording as Lorraine was speaking to police called to the disturbance, when the brothers rushed through the door, pushing one officer to the side.

Shrieks and screeches were then heard in the background as the footage seemed to catch Gareth Cable jabbing his arm towards his brother before being Tasered and escorted away from the property by police officers.

Jurors have been told the defendant accepts he had the black handled kitchen knife and stabbed his brother with the pink handled knife.

But he denies attempted murder and having an article with a blade or a point – namely a Stanley knife. The trial continues.
