Nephew jailed for 14 years for killing uncle in Italy
A man who bludgeoned his uncle to death has been jailed by an Italian court as the victim's widow said her family's world had been "destroyed".
Guarav Kainth was sentenced to 14 years and eight months in prison after he was found guilty of murdering father-of-three Baldev Kainth, from Birmingham, with a metal bar after a dispute over money.
The incident happened in Sessa Aurunca, near Naples, in southern Italy.
Carer Baldev Kainth, of Kingstanding, was taken to hospital in Naples but died of his injuries on August 2.
His nephew was detained by Italian police in Fondi, an hour's drive from Sessa Aurunca.
Following a trial the 21-year-old was convicted at the Tribunale di Santa Maria Capua Vetere on Tuesday evening, the family's lawyers said.
After the hearing, Ranjit Kaur said: "My family's lives were totally devastated when our beloved husband and father was so cruelly taken from us.
"By murdering him his killer has destroyed our world."
In a statement issued through her lawyers Slater and Gordon, she described how her young daughter had run to her screaming after witnessing the attack on her 53-year-old father in August last year.
Mrs Kaur said: "What is even worse is that at the age of seven Riya witnessed her father being murdered.
"She saw everything when her father was struck by a metal bar and came running into me screaming, 'Mummy, somebody has killed daddy!'
"This was a family holiday and we thought his nephew was going to sit down and talk with Baldev about their disagreements.
"But my husband didn't stand a chance.
"As soon as he saw him he struck him over the head with an iron bar. I want to ask him why did he have to kill him. I need to know."
She added: "Riya sometimes wakes up at night having dreamt about her dad and is upset. She comes home from school sad because all of the other children have been talking about their dads. This has deeply affected her and she misses him terribly.
"No sentence would ever be enough after what he did to my husband. I wish he could be in jail for the rest of his life."
Kieran Mitchell, a specialist travel lawyer at Slater and Gordon, said: "Baldev was a family man who was brutally snatched away from his wife and daughter.
"For his little girl to have witnessed the moment her father died is truly horrific.
"Baldev went to Italy in good faith to talk to his nephew but instead was bludgeoned to death.
"Nothing will truly heal the scars the trauma his murder has left on his family but I hope today's sentence will allow them to move on and start rebuilding their lives."
