News of the apprentice posts with the force's forensics team was shared 3,600 times on Facebook, reaching half a million people and generating 2,500 comments.

The astonishing response forced the three-week application window to be closed early so the deluge of forms could be processed.

Staff are now trying to help the hundreds of unsuccessful candidates to see if there are other jobs for them in the force.

Head of Forensic Scene Investigators and Major Crime Michelle Painter said: "We were overwhelmed by the popularity of the vacancies, and the applications have included some very strong candidates.

"It is heartening to see so many people want to join West Midlands Police. I’m really looking forward to holding the interviews.

"While we’re thrilled that over 2,000 young people applied, the reality is there are only two vacancies. A lot of young people who expressed an interest to work for WMP will be disappointed."
