Staff and patients, some of whom were still in their beds, were forced to wait outside Royal Stoke University Hospital following the fire yesterday.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM), which also runs Stafford's County Hospital, was forced to warn people to stay away from the 24-hour A&E while the fire was raging.

Staffordshire Police say they have arrested a 39-year-old man today in connection with the fire and a separate blaze at Staffordshire University’s Beacon building in Stoke.

The man, who was detained in Manchester today, has been arrested on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life.

Fire broke out at the hospital’s main building at around 6pm yesterday evening.

Patients had to be temporarily evacuated.

Earlier in the evening at around 4.45pm fire broke out in toilets at the Staffordshire University building.
