Gareth Morgan, the former deputy chief constable at Avon and Somerset police, is expected to get the green light this afternoon at a special meeting of Staffordshire's police and crime panel.

Mr Morgan was selected for the role by Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis from a shortlist of three.

At today's meeting Mr Ellis will tell the panel about the recruitment and selection process followed, as well as why he opted for Mr Morgan.

Mr Morgan will then give a presentation to the panel before answering questions from the panel.

Once the panel are satisfied he will be confirmed to take over from current chief constable Jane Sawyers who is retiring.

Mr Ellis said: “We had exceptionally strong candidates for the position, but Gareth demonstrated the knowledge and breadth of experience needed to take the force through the huge period of change needed over the coming months to meet the ever-changing face of crime and evolving threats.”

Mr Morgan started his career with West Midlands Police in 1990 and during his career has spent time at the FBI National Academy at Quantico and completed a secondment to the Home Office.
