Man charged over holding bank worker hostage

A man has been charged in relation to holding a staff member hostage at a bank - and will appear in court today.

David Hempseed is accused of false imprisonment and possession of an imitation firearm at Natwest in Bristol Road South, Northfield, Birmingham.

The 60 year-old, from Northfield, Birmingham, is also charged with possession of a knife and arson with intent to endanger life.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court today.

Armed police descended on the branch at midday on Friday after receiving calls about a gunman holding people hostage.

After a standoff lasting nearly 50 minutes, a man left the bank and surrendered to police.

He was taken to hospital for a medical assessment.
