Gurminder Singh Sidhu has told his trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court that he watched in the hallway of a house as his two co-defendants battered 52-year-old Barry Shillam outside.

Sidhu, aged 40 and from St Matthew's Road in Smethwick, was giving evidence yesterday.

He said he was standing in the hallway of the house in Brook Street, Smethwick, along with a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, while Andrea Jones and John Scott were beating him up outside.

He has also denied ever hitting Mr Shillam, after an argument erupted inside the house over some cider.

Sidhu has told the court that it was Jones who initially launched the attack, punching Mr Shillam, before Scott became involved.

During the attack Mr Shillam suffered injuries including a large tear to his spleen, torn blood vessels in his bowel, a fractured rib and internal bruising.

Sidhu, Jones, aged 39 and Scott, 46, both from Brook Street in Smethwick, all deny murder.

The trial continues.
