Woman, 78, is punched in Smethwick street

An elderly woman with dementia was punched in the face by a robber who took off with her handbag leaving his injured victim on the ground.

The 78-year-old suffered a fractured cheekbone and bruising to her face following the attack in Manor Road in Smethwick.

Police today revealed details of the robbery in a bid to find the woman's attacker.

He was last seen cycling off towards Addenbrooke Road on a black mountain bike.

He is described as black, 6ft tall and aged 20 to 25 years old. He had an athletic build, short cropped hair and a chiselled jaw.

The robber wore a green hooded top, dark bottoms and trainers.

Police have launched a significant investigation which has included looking at CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.

Dc James Noble, from Sandwell CID, said: "This was a really nasty attack on a vulnerable member of the community who was hospitalised after what happened.

"The cowardly suspect struck in broad daylight and had absolutely no regard for his victim, who has dementia.

"If you were in the area at the time or have any information about what happened please contact us. You may have the one piece of information we need to bring this man to justice."

The robbery took place at around 2.05pm on July 16.
