The 16-year-old victim had been chased by up to 80 men and was using the knife to stop them grabbing him, according to a witness at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The witness, who was giving evidence under the pseudonym Adam Miller and whose voice was disguised, said the men shouted 'there he is, there he is' when they spotted Ben near the Asra day centre in Smethwick.

Mr Miller said: "As someone tried to grab him with their hands he put the knife towards them."

Mr Miller said shortly afterwards Ben was stabbed with a blade, five or six inches long.

Ben, of Holden Crescent, Coalpool, Walsall, died after being stabbed in his leg outside the Smethwick Old Guards and Comrades Club on July 28 last year.

Andy Ly, aged 18, of Fulmer Walk, and Omar Robinson, 19, of Rann Close, both Ladywood, deny murder. They also deny violent disorder along with five others.
