With the long trading shop now closed, after an emotional last day on Saturday May 31, it might be the ideal time to retire but youthful minded great-grandmother Jean, who lives in Wordsley, has other ideas.

Instead of stepping down and taking it easy, she’s in the market for a further opportunity.

She said: “I might like to work in a charity shop a couple of days a week.”

Clive Sowerby, owner of Sowerbys Shoes which has been in Lower High Street since 1977 and trading since 1925, described his dependable assistant as “an inspiration”.

He said: “She’s been with me 50 years. She’s loyal, honest, very hard-working; she loves people and she loves her job.”
