12 successful West Midlands companies recognised with prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise

A diverse collection of successful companies in the West Midlands have been recognised for their excellence and growth with the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise, which is now in its third year.

The accolade has been awarded to 12 businesses across the region that have played a key role in the Government's mission for economic growth.

The historic family run firm, which traces its roots back to 1800, is a leading producer of run flat tyre technology which helps to keep military personnel and dignitaries safe around the world.

The company, part of the Westley Group, is among 12 in the region recognised with the coveted award.

Tom Westley, chief operating officer, was delighted with the recognition, in the international trade category, and said: "It's a great honour for us. We've been working hard on building our business and winning new customers across the world. It's recognition of that hard work and the quality of our products."

The company employs 55 people at its two bases in Cradley Heath in Gawne Lane and on the Waterfall Lane Trading Estate.

Bowers & Jones, in Bilston, which specialises in the design, manufacture and refurbishment of equipment for the metal forming industry, has also been awarded the prestigious King's Award for Enterprise in the international trade category.

Jane Sommerville, managing director at Bowers & Jones, said: "This award represents a tremendous achievement for our entire business."

Wednesbury-based Exol Lubricants, a trusted global supplier of high-performance lubricants for automotive, industrial, agricultural, off-highway and commercial applications, has also been recognised in the international trade category of the awards.

Steve Everitt, managing director, said: “We are immensely proud to receive the King’s Award for International Trade. This honour is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, both in the UK and across our global distribution network."

Mobell Communications in Hednesford, which provides communications solutions for people moving to or travelling in Japan and Japanese people living or travelling in the USA, has also been named a winner of the coveted award in the international trade category.

Company chairman Vince Owen said: "We're just delighted. It's a real honour."

Other recipients in the region include: Birmingham-based KPM Marine and Made Media, plus SEADA Technology in Bromsgrove, Grainger and Worrall in Bridgnorth, Fabweld Steel Products in Telford, Level Peaks Associates and Berrington Pure Spring Water, both in Herefordshire, and TMT in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

Gareth Thomas, Minister for Services, Small Businesses and Exports, said: “There are some fantastic West Midlands businesses recognised in this year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise."I wish the winners every success as they continue to grow, innovate and prosper, and commend the invaluable contributions they have already made to communities at home in the West Midlands and abroad, helping to boost the UK economy.”

The King’s Awards for Enterprise were renamed two years ago to reflect His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

The award programme, now in its 59th year, has seen more than 8,000 companies recognised since its inception in 1965.His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants – The King’s representatives – will present the awards to businesses locally at a later date.

A representative from each winning business will also be invited to a special Royal reception event.
