190 workers on move as Shrewsbury factory to close
A factory with 190 workers is facing closure after bosses announced new business plans.
Castings firm Stadco, which has bases in Llanfyllin, near Oswestry and Telford, is proposing to close its Shrewsbury base in Harlescott by the middle of next year.
The firm said it announced the plans to workers last night and would aim to move all 190 workers to its other plants, which also includes Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands.
Tracy Fuerst, global director of corporate communications and public relations for Stadco, said: "Stadco Shrewsbury, a manufacturing division of Magna International Inc’s Cosma International operating unit, confirms that they have communicated to employees a proposal to transfer their current business to neighboring Magna facilities and potentially close the Stadco facility by mid-2019.
"If approved, Stadco’s operations would be redistributed to the company’s Castle Bromwich, Powys and Telford plants without disruption to the customer.
"Approximately 190 employees would be affected by the closure and would have the opportunity to move to one of the three neighbouring facilities.
"In recent years, Magna has pursued increased operational efficiencies and decreased costs across all its operations, all while strengthening its market presence. The company believes this is the best approach to position the overall business for growth and respond to the challenging market conditions.
"Plant management is currently in discussions with its customer as well as the works council. No further details are available at this time."
