The pair – Araf Sultan and Roy Chauhan – bought the number plate for an undisclosed amount 14 years ago.

Now the pair are preparing to pitch the plate, which reads Ya Allah, at auction in United Arab Emirates, and are hoping to fetch more than £1m.

It comes after a plate displaying AB11 DBU, reading Abu Dhabi, sold for £750,000 at an auction in the oil-rich Middle Eastern country.

Mr Chauhan, aged 45, of Walsall, said: “We bought the plate for novelty and just a bit of fun.

"We never thought it could possibly be worth so much money, but after seeing the other plate go for so much we are sure that this will be worth a lot more.

“It is an exciting time, and we’re looking at auctioneers in the country now.”

Mr Chauhan believes residents in the UAE buy UK number plates for when they visit the UK, to display on their cars.

He said: “Abu Dhabi is a place where money is no object.”
