Motorists between Walsall and Birmingham are again facing road diversions as bridge work progresses

Drivers are again being diverted from a busy commuter link between Walsall and Birmingham as construction progresses on Pelsall's York's Bridge hits the next phase.

The new £3 million structure is being built in Norton Road to take the place of a former humpback bridge to take traffic over the Essington and Wyrley Canal. 

As a result Norton Road between Charles Crescent and Nest Common is now closed for weeks until June 22 to enable Telford based contractors McPhillips to carry out road reconstruction and drainage work.

Access to remains open to the Fingerpost Public House and other properties from the Lichfield Road junction. Traffic is being diverted via A5 Watling Street to Brownhills via Chester Road North, Pelsall Road and Lichfield Road. 

Pelsall First Councillor Team posted on Facebook: "These essential works being carried out by McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd and Walsall Council include full carriageway reconstruction and drainage upgrades near York’s Bridge. A signed diversion route is in place – please refer to the map- to plan your alternative route.

Fingerpost Pub manager Sam Blackwell says:"We are going to to ride out the works. The contractor is doing everything it can to help by putting up big diversions signs and reminding people that we're still open.
