As the final whistle blew, the Walsall side of Wembley Stadium fell silent as the end of a long and hard season ended in disappointment.

Walsall fans had arrived at Wembley in good voice and with a confident feeling, but were left facing the grim reality of another season in League Two following a 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the League Two playoff final.

It was a game which seemed to sum up the Saddlers season, full of effort, but little reward and with very few shots on goal against a determined Dons defence, while the winning goal from Myles Hippolyte came after a corner wasn't fully cleared.

As fans began to make their way out of Wembley and back onto the coaches to head north back to Walsall, the conversation among fans was centered around who might be leaving the club in the summer and the way the club had lost its form after Christmas.

Steve Read had travelled down from Edinburgh and said he was disappointed at the performance in general.

He said: "I'm just feeling really low as we came here today hoping we could turn it around after a bad second half of the season, but they never really turned up today.

"It was just all huff and puff and there was no quality there, I don't remember a shot on target and it's just really disappointing and deflating.

"I'm also not sure if I can take any positives at the moment. We've got some good young players, but they might get sold in the summer, and the loan players will go back, so we might be starting from scratch again.

"Considering where we were at Christmas, it's just so disappointing."
