Two men charged with murder of Birmingham man, 83, who was allegedly struck with screwdriver

Two men have been charged with murder and conspiracy to rob following the death of an elderly man who was allegedly struck with a screwdriver in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said the alleged victim Neil O'Donnell, aged 83, was approached by a man who demanded his watch and phone before assaulting him with a screwdriver, in Cateswell Road, Hall Green, at around 2.30pm on May 14.

The man fled empty-handed, but Mr O’Donnell suffered an arm injury and was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged. He was re-admitted to hospital on May17, but sadly died on 21 May.  

Wesley McDonnell, aged 46, and Tony Griffin, aged 54, were arrested the following day. 

In an update the force said McDonnell and Griffin have today been charged with murder and conspiracy to rob and remanded in custody. 

They are due to appear before Birmingham magistrates today. 

Det Insp Nigel Box, leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts are with Mr O’Donnell’s family today and we are continuing to offer them all the support we can. They have asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with their loss."
