Birmingham city centre building blaze was 'accidental'

Firefighters remain at the scene of an accidental building blaze in Birmingham city centre.

A single crew remains at the premises where checks for hotspots are being done.

 Structural engineers have also carried out safety checks at the three-storey block in Rea Street in Digbeth which erupted into flames on around 9am on Tuesday morning (May 20).

In a post on X West Midlands Fire Service stated: "@WestMidsFireFirefighters have been tackling hotspots after a fire on Rea Street, Digbeth. 

"Specialist technical rescue colleagues and a structural engineer have been in attendance today. One crew remains. The fire is believed to be accidental."

Yesterday (May 20), dramatic drone footage shows a blaze in Digbeth, Birmingham which was tackled by ten crews this morning and is still in progress. 

A crew from Staffordshire Fire attended along with eight fire engines, a hydraulic aerial platform and a response vehicle at the large three storey building on Rea Street.

At the time, a statement from West Midlands Fire Service said: "The main seats of fire have now been extinguished at the ongoing incident on Rea Street in Digbeth.

"Firefighters are now tackling several remaining hotspots across the site. Approximately 90 per-cent of the building has been affected by fire. 

 "Residents and businesses in the area should continue to keep doors and windows closed and visitors avoid the area while we and partner agencies work at the scene."
