Investigation into Smethwick fire finds 'evidence of cannabis farm'

Police investigating a major blaze that tore through a derelict building in Smethwick have found evidence that a cannabis farm was operating from inside.

Emergency services were called to Anderson Road in Bearwood just after 2am on Sunday (May 18) to reports of a severe fire at a three-storey building

Around 70 firefighters and 15 fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze at the derelict site, where no one was known to have been injured.

The fire service said that resources was scaled down at around 9.45am, before finally being reduced to one fire engine at the following afternoon.

The spokesperson added: "Crews worked with structural engineers and National Grid to locate and damp down hotspots in hard-to-reach areas. They were supported by drone operations.
