National Highways West Midlands made the announcement on social media saying the disruption was caused by a police-led incident.

They also warned of very long delays on approach and for drivers to consider alternative routes if they had not yet set off on their journey.

West Midlands Police has since released a statement, saying they were concerned for the safety of a woman near a bridge.

It read: "We were called to the M5 near junction 2, following concerns for the safety of a woman near a bridge at around 12.38pm today (Sat).

"The motorway was closed for a short time. The woman was taken to hospital to be checked over."

The incident has since cleared.
