Midlands Hurricanes have organised a Women in League open day on Sunday, May 25 as a way of encouraging more women players to take up the game and also help to build its women's team.

The women's team made its first appearances last year with a runners up appearance in the Midlands 9s and through a series of games against other clubs in the West Midlands and the open day is the next step in the club's work in the community.

The open day will run from 11am to 1pm on the pitch at Alexander Stadium with a full training session involving existing members of the women's team and is open to people who have played before or are trying the sport for the first time.

Following the session, all those attending will be invited to sit down for a meal and will be welcome to watch the men's team take on Whitehaven in the League One fixture.

It's the latest community event being run by the Hurricanes, following on from a successful Canes for a Day event at Bournville Rugby Club on May 3 and managing director Eorl Crabtree said he hoped that those taking part would enjoy the day.

The event aims to bring more women into Rugby League, as well as promote the sport in the region

He said: “This Open Day is about breaking down barriers and showing that rugby league is for everyone.

"Whether you’ve played before or are completely new to the game, we want to welcome you into our rugby family.

"The women’s game is growing rapidly, and the Midlands has a huge role to play in that development.

"As a club, we’re passionate about creating platforms for women and girls to shine, and this is just the beginning.

"We want people to come along, give it a go, and most importantly, have fun.”
