The Home Office said the major illegal working operation was carried out by an Immigration Enforcement team which initially visited a commercial unit in Upper Villers Street in Blakenhall.

When they arrived they found a "significant number of illegal workers" who were then arrested resulting in a number of residential properties being searched including a bungalow in Coton Road, in Penn.

The Home Office stated: “Organised immigration crime is a multi-million pound industry which stretches from the trafficking routes thousands of miles away through which people are brought to our country to the high streets across Britain where many of those people end up working illegally.

“As part of our Plan for Change, this government is cracking down on that criminal industry at every level, including stepping up our visits to businesses where illegal working is taking place and increasing our enforcement action both against illegal workers and the people who employ them.”

The action follows new measures announced this week by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer who said he wanted to reduce the number of migrants coming to the UK.

He also said the country risked becoming an “island of strangers” without better integration and added that he wanted net migration to fall  “significantly” within the next four years.
