Man safeguarded by police after being seen on Wolverhampton bridge

A man was taken to hospital and safeguarded by police after being found standing on a bridge in an incident which brought traffic chaos across Wolverhampton.

Officers from West Midlands Police were called to Railway Drive near Wolverhampton Railway Station on Thursday evening after receiving reports of concern for the welfare of a man who was on a nearby bridge.

Traffic around the city centre was brought to a virtual standstill while officers worked to safeguard the man, who was eventually taken to hospital.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called to Wolverhampton train station on Railway Drive, shortly after 5.30pm yesterday, following concerns for the welfare of a man who was on a bridge.

"The man was taken to hospital and safeguarded."
