Prolific Wolverhampton shoplifter with taste for cheese and chocolates jailed

A shoplifter who preyed on Wolverhampton businesses has been locked up after committing nine offences in less than a month.

Stephen Maher, aged 37, was arrested after stealing goods totalling around £850 and often threatening staff as he took items like cheese, sweets, chocolate and meat. 

West Midlands Police said he had systematically targeted two stores in Willenhall Road despite already being subject to a restraining order and a criminal behaviour order banning him from entering those premises.

His spree ran from January 21 through to February 9 before Maher, of no fixed address, was arrested by officers in Fallings Park on February 10.

Maher admitted nine counts of shop theft as well as breaches to a community behaviour order and restraining order.

On April 25 he was jailed at Wolverhampton Crown Court for three years and six months.

The force said it was taking crime against businesses the city seriously and was working with retailers and store security staff to keep traders and customers safe.
