Russian Nikolajs Lizunovs, 42, of Charles Wellesley Court, Wolverhampton, opted to represent himself at Walsall Magistrates Court during a trial - despite not being able to speak English.

He was found guilty and sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court for two counts of criminal damage and intentional strangulation.

Lizunovs' partner finished with him in 2022 but they continued to live together in Smethwick. However, in September 2023 he returned home to discover she was planning to fly to Latvia with their daughter. He flew into a rage and smashed her iPhone, destroyed her passport and then strangled her.
