On the morning of an eight week trial was due to begin at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Monday) seven defendants changed their pleas to guilty to a lesser charge.
The case centred around a violent clash shortly before midnight on July 31, last year. An arsenal of weapons were brought to the melee which was the culmination of disagreements and attacks between two gangs, many with family connections, around the Old Birchills.
After the dust settled on the violence four men were taken to hospital following reports of men armed with machetes, baseball and cricket bats and a shot being fired at a car in Reedswood Lane.
After a massive police investigation, which even included West Midlands Police invoking Section 60 stop and search powers in the area and several roads being closed to the public.
Originally some of those involved were questioned and charged with attempted murder. However, in January when the case reached court six men were charged with conspiracy to murder and two others were charged with lesser charges.
With a jury chosen for the trial on Friday, Mohammed Sajid, aged 38, of Exeter Place, Alumwell; Amar Shazad, aged 37, of Victor Street, Caldmore; Khurham Sajad, aged 23, of Hucker Road, Pleck; Shazad Mahmood, aged 45, of Drayton Street; and Waheed Ayub, aged 28, of Westbourne Street, Butts; were charged with conspiracy to murder, together with others unknown.
