Insider Media has ranked the country's largest airports and Birmingham Airport (BHX) sits comfortably at number five with a turnover of £184.4 million in the year up to March 31, 2024.
Heathrow naturally tops the list, with turnover of £3.6bn in 2024 and a record 83.9 million passenger numbers passing through the airport during the year.Gatwick ranks second with a turnover of £1.02bn, followed by Manchester Airport (£511.8m), London Stansted (£429.2m) then Birmingham Airport which recently revealed it enjoyed a record year in 2024/25 with more than 13 million passengers travelling through its doors during the year.

BHX bosses also celebrated a record March, when more than 950,000 passengers travelled through the airport, a 3.8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, and the airport is expecting close to 14m passengers will travel through the transport hub in 2025/26.
Amid the good news the airport was also recently ranked the second worst in the UK for flight delays, with passengers waiting an average of more than 21 minutes beyond scheduled departure times in 2024, according to new figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
To help improve the experience for travellers and keep up with the growth in passenger numbers, however, the airport is planning investment in both terminal facilities and infrastructure including an extra baggage carousel in the north terminal, a reconfiguration and expansion of the south immigration area and two extra security screening lanes. A new food and beverage area is also planned and set to open in 2026 to cater for the increase in customers.
A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport said of its ranking as the fifth biggest airport: “We’re pleased to be experiencing a period of significant growth at Birmingham Airport with this year expected to be our busiest one yet. This exciting period also coincides with our extensive on-going investment plan which will enhance the customer experience, as well as the expansion of terminal facilities to improve operational efficiency.
"As a key employer of our region that employs over 7,000 people across 150 companies, we also recognise the impact that our growth has on our local economy, and we’re pleased to have increased our workforce by 17 per cent year-on-year, unlocking more benefits for the West Midlands area.
"Looking forward as HS2 arrives at our airport by 2033, future growth will be delivered as BHX will effectively be the equivalent to Zone 5 with connectivity in to the capital in less than minutes.”
