Fun in the sun and a taste of history as St George's Day is celebrated at Dudley Zoo and Castle

The date of the commemoration may have changed this year but staff and visitors to Dudley Zoo and Castle were still celebrating the legend of St George with their normal gusto.

St George's Day this year is actually on Monday (April 28), having been pushed back from the normal date of April 23 due to the church calendar and Easter week.

The change of date didn't stop the patriotic and historic fun, with visitors over the weekend enjoying activities for all the family in the castle's courtyard.

Hundreds of people attended to mark England's patron saint's feast day, and improved weather ensured it was a day to remember for the families who came along.

The traditional medieval re-enactment was popular as ever and there were castle and history tours, talks on animals and hula hoop and circus shows.

For the kids there were colouring activities, face painting and a chance for people to win prizes on the tombola.

The warm and sunny weather played its part and youngsters took advantage to make sandcastles in the sun. Temperatures are expected to keep rising into this week, and reach the mid 20s by Wednesday (April 30).
