If proposals are given the green light, the supermarket would be built at the old FA Gills abattoir site on Parkfield Road in the Parkfield area of the city.

The pork producer and wholesaler traded as Gills and is famous for its sausages.

The business, founded in 1938, entered administration last year.

The proposed Lidl store would create up to 40 new jobs and will form part of an application to Wolverhampton Council which also includes plans for around 17 new homes at the site.

The properties would include affordable housing and a mix of single-occupant and family residences.

Lidl has launched a public consultation on the plans, with residents invited to have their say.

Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “As demand across the West Midlands continues to grow, our dedicated property team have been identifying sites in and around Wolverhampton that would benefit from greater retail choice and investment.

"We’re excited to launch this consultation and want as many residents as possible to share their views.

"If approved, this scheme would create around 40 new jobs and bring much-needed housing to the area, including affordable homes. We’re looking forward to hearing from the community in the coming weeks.”

The proposed store would feature the discount supermarket's much-loved bakery, customer toilets, as well as rapid electric vehicle charging points, covered bicycle parking and dedicated accessible and parent-and-child spaces.
