Halesowen North Councillor Stuart Henley, who is also a serving firefighter, has been working to cut speeding in his ward and enlisted local residents to report dangerous driving.

He said: "As your local councillor and a firefighter, I want to take a moment to address a pressing issue that affects us all: speeding. It’s encouraging to see that after countless reports from residents, our local police are beginning to take significant action.

"I attended a meeting at the Police and Crime Commissioner’s headquarters in Birmingham to discuss this vital issue, and it’s clear that we need tougher measures against those who flout speed limits.

"Speeding is more than just a breach of the law; it's an irresponsible act that endangers lives. Each time someone exceeds the speed limit, they put not only their own life at risk but also endanger pedestrians, cyclists, and fellow motorists."

He added: "The consequences can be devastating—not just for those involved in a crash, but for our entire community. When accidents occur due to speeding, it's our emergency services who are called into action—firefighters, paramedics, and police officers who rush to the scene to save lives.

"This response is not without cost, both in terms of human resources and financial implications. The burden on our NHS is immense, with serious injuries leading to lengthy hospital stays and treatment."

Councillor Henley believes taxpayers are footing the bill for speeding and its consequences.

He added: "Ultimately, these costs fall on taxpayers, who fund our public services and bear the weight of these reckless behaviours. We must unite as a community to tackle this critical issue head-on. Tough action is needed against those who jeopardise the safety of others with their careless driving.

"As we move forward, let’s commit to raising awareness about the dangers of speeding and encourage responsible driving. Together, we can create safer roads for everyone. Please do your part to adhere to speed limits and speak up if you witness dangerous driving in our neighbourhood.

"Every action counts! Report all speeding issues to the police via 101, also capture any evidence you can on your CCTV and doorcam. Please feel free to also send myself the footage to follow it up with the police and the council to see how we can make the roads slower and safer."

A recent speeding trap in the town caught several drivers over the speed limit.

Councillor Henley added: "Halesowen NHT have conducted a community speed watch on Lansdowne Road this afternoon. It's a shame to see so many people speeding."
