Traders, ward councillors and members of the public marked the opening of Lions Way, which has created a direct pedestrian access between the high street and car parks at Little Cottage Street.

The linkway will also form part of a key access between the high street and planned Metro terminus.

Brierley Hill councillor Adam Davies said: “This transformation has made such a difference, turning what was a derelict eyesore into a really pleasant and useful access for people wanting to move around this part of the town.

“The name Lions Way also gives a proud nod to part of Brierley Hill’s sporting past, remembering the Brierley Hill Alliance football team who used to play where Asda is now.”

Fellow ward councillor Wayne Little added: “We’re continuing to push West Midlands Combined Authority, the Mayor and Transport for West Midlands for full delivery of the Metro right the way to Brierley Hill town centre as promised, at which point Lions Way will be even more useful to help local people and businesses in the town to make the most of the Metro.”

Steve Bridgwater, site supervisor at Brierley Hill Market and vice chairperson of Brierley Hill Community Forum, said the site was previously “an eyesore that blighted the high street for too long” and he added: “It’s great to see it with a new lease of life as a vibrant public space that helps shoppers move around the town.”
