Investigation 'still ongoing' after woman hit on golf course by van being pursued by police
An investigation continues after a woman was critically injured when she was struck by a van that was being pursued by police.
Staffordshire Police have confirmed that the 'investigation continues' into an incident where a woman was struck by a van on Aston Wood Golf Course on Friday morning.
The woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by the vehicle at Aston Wood Golf Club, in Little Aston, at around 10.26am.
The incident took place after West Midlands Police officers in two patrol cars began pursuing a grey Nissan van in Kingstanding, Birmingham at around 10.15am, following reports of suspicious activity in the area.
Sadly, the Nissan van came off the road and went up the embankment of the golf course where it struck the woman.
Officers followed on foot a short time later before administering first aid to the woman, who was taken to hospital for 'life-changing' injuries.
An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation was quickly launched following the incident, with the IPOC saying they are in the 'initial stages' of their investigation into West Midlands Police's involvement prior to the road traffic collision.
An IOPC spokesperson said: "We can confirm we are independently investigating West Midlands Police’s involvement prior to a road traffic collision in Staffordshire, following which a member of the public has sustained serious injuries.
“Officers followed a short time later, on foot, and gave first aid to the woman, who was then taken to hospital for treatment for life-changing injuries.
“As soon as we were notified by West Midlands Police of the incident, we sent investigators to the scene and police post-incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.
“Our investigation is in its initial stages."
Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Police are continuing to work together to locate the driver and two passengers who all fled from the scene following the incident.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: "Detectives are continuing to carry out enquiries alongside West Midlands Police to investigate a serious collision in Shenstone.
"We were called to Aston Wood Golf Club on Blake Street at 10.25am yesterday (Friday 11 April) after a grey Nissan van struck a member of the public following a pursuit by West Midlands Police officers.
"The driver and two passengers from the van ran off and remain outstanding. We’re working hard to trawl through CCTV, speak to witnesses and investigate their movements in order to locate them.
"A woman in her 60s, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries, remains in a critical but stable condition. Her family are being supported by specialist officers."
Staffordshire Police have appealed for information relating to the incident, asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to get in touch via their major incident public portal.
