Vaisakhi in Wolverhampton and Walsall: Road closures for processions as thousands will join celebrations - full details here

Road closures have been announced for the annual Vaisakhi celebrations in Wolverhampton, culminating in a celebration at West Park.

The free cultural festival will take place in Wolverhampton on Sunday May 4 between 12 noon and 5pm, with thousands of people expected to attend. The Walsall event is being held tomorrow (Sunday) April 13.

Speeches by religious leaders, family entertainment, including a fun fair and live music performances, as well as free food will all feature throughout the Wolverhampton event.

A parade from the Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara starting on Cannock Road will take place before the event at 8.30am

Vaisakhi is the Sikh New Year festival, and this year marks the 326th anniversary of the creation of the Khalsa Order and making of Saint-Solider by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699.

Those attending the festival by car are being asked to park responsibly in the area, or to use nearby car parks on Fold Street and Clifton Street, as there will be limited parking surrounding West Park.

Four key road closures for Vasaikhi in Wolverhampton on Sunday May 4

Road closures will be in place from 8am to 6pm on the following roads: 

  • Lansdowne Road; 

  • Park Avenue; 

  • Park Road East - closed between junctions with Park Road West/Southgate and Devon Road; 

  • Park Road West - closed between junctions with Park Road East/Southgate and Summerfield Road; Southgate.

City of Wolverhampton Council said further details have been sent to residents who will be affected.

Walsall Vasaikhi celebrations, route and rolling road closures on Sunday April 13

There will also be rolling road closures in Walsall on Sunday where the annual festival will take place in the town.

The procession takes place between 10am and 2pm with the route as follows: 

  • West Bromwich Street; 

  • Corporation Street; 

  • Wednesbury Road, 

  • A4038 Darlaston Road; 

  • Wellington Street (where the procession will halt for sixty minutes) before continuing on 

  • A4148 Pleck Road; Rollingmill Street (where the procession will halt for thirty minutes) before proceeding along Corporation Street West and Corporation Street. 

  • It will conclude at the temple on West Bromwich Street.

A parade from Wednesfield to Walsall took place last Sunday and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick will mark the event a week on Sunday, April 20
